چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: The preconceptual period is undeniably a delicate and important window which should not be overlooked during fertility counseling. The aim of this study was to identify challenges and barriers to the delivery of preconception care in Iran. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, Pubmed and Google scholar were systematically searched up to November ۲, ۲۰۲۱. The search strategy contained MeSH terms and key words related to preconception care and challenges. Results: We identified the challenges and barriers affecting the uptake and delivery of preconception care (PCC): Defects in system information management, Defects in the referral system, Lack of proper notices, Women of childbearing age as the only target group for PCC, poor coordination within organization and outside, Lack of access of employees to the services of health centers, Focus more on the quantity of care rather than improving the quality of care, Weakness in identifying and follow up women in the target group, Substance Use and Risky Sexual Behaviors Among women, high rate of unplanned pregnancies, Lack of registration system for follow up risk factors before pregnancy and Lack of indicators to determine the effectiveness of preconception care. Conclusion: The package of PCC interventions delivered in a particular setting will depend on the local epidemiology, the interventions already being delivered, and the resources in place to deliver additional interventions. Although a range of population groups could benefit from preconception care, prioritization based on need and feasibility will be needed.
